Fish Food
Fish Food
Most people agree, feeding their Koi or Goldfish is one the most rewarding parts of owning a fish pond. Though enjoyable, many fish owners do not realize the importance of feeding. There are many things to consider such as the amount of time spent feeding and which foods you use to ensure your pond fish stay healthy and colorful. During the warmer months when the water temperature is consistently above 60ºF it is recommended that you feed a diet high in protein, which is needed for healthy growth. We have many different blends of pond fish food which have all the necessary nutrients for warm weather feeding. In the spring and fall when pond temperatures drop below 60ºF but are still above 40ºF Goldfish and Koi cannot digest foods containing protein as easily as they can in the summer, this is a good time to start feeding a fish food high in wheat germ which is much easier for the fish to digest. Feeding your Koi fish food that contains protein in cold water can cause stress and sickness so it is important that you use the right food for the weather.
Medicated Fish Food
Medicated fish food is intended for sick fish only. Fish food medications are intended to to more effectively treat internal and external bacteria by allowing the sick fish to actually ingest the medication which is much more effective than adding medication to the water itself. This provides a better opportunity for the active medications for ill fish will be absorbed internally. Water added fish medicated treatments have to be absorbed via gills or through the scales, and there is no good way to know how effective those absorption rates are. Medicated fish foods are designed to be easily digested by your ailing fish, making it easier for the medications to work quickly. Most fish food medications contain both anti-bacterial and anti-parasite medicines. The anti-bacteria help to control internal and external bacterial infections, open ulcers and sores, fin rot and columnaris. The anti-parasite contain praziquantel for internal parasites, such as intestinal worms. Using medicated fish foods are recommended for indisposed Koi fish and goldfish and is the most effective way to treat their illnesses.
