Pond Filters
Water filtration is an essential part of maintaining a clear and healthy pond. A pond filter is an absolute necessity when any fish are added. As fish get larger in size or quantity, the size of the filter you choose must also increase. All fish produce ammonia as a result of their waste, this can be deadly if not treated. Many new pond owners tend to think that solids removal is the main purpose of a pond filter system, however this is not true. Biofilters have one primary job, converting toxic ammonia and nitrite into nitrate which is good for the overall health of the pond. This works by allowing beneficial bacteria to grow on the media inside of the filter, which can be in the form of sponges, brushes, beads or various other materials, this bacteria will oxidize the water essentially eliminating toxins and recycling them into more productive nitrate which is basically food for your pond plants. The removal of solids is only a secondary function of a biofilter.
Why do I need a Pond Filter?
Pond water can become murky and clouded if not treated, a properly sized filter can help keep the water clear so you can enjoy and admire your fish. Decomposing organic substances within the water will put off an uninviting smell and cause it look unkempt. Fish ponds especially need filtration as they tend to have high ammonia levels which are harmful to the fish. These symptoms are easily remedied by a good filtration system.
