Beneficial Bacteria & Treatments
Beneficial Bacteria
Beneficial bacteria are are a must in any goldfish pond, Koi pond or water garden application. Beneficial bacteria natural microorganisms that play a key role in maintaining water clarity and overall creating a healthier environment in your water garden. The beneficial bacteria will occur and grown naturally, however this can take several weeks to form a colony of beneficial bacteria large enough to become effective. By regularly adding beneficial bacteria, you are expediting the natural process and growth of good pond bacteria. This will allow faster action of the benefits of pond bacteria to maintain a closer to neutral pH level, and will naturally erode waste created by goldfish, Koi and organic plants, as well as lower nitrogen and phosphorus levels that can injure or kill pond fish. As an important part in pond filtration, beneficial bacteria change toxic ammonia levels. If there is a void in beneficial bacteria, your biological filter will only remove solid particles and will not rid of the organic pollutants and waste in your water garden. It is imperative to replenish beneficial bacteria levels regularly as a precautionary maintenance, especially after cleaning the filtration system in your Koi pond, fish pond or water garden.
Water Treatments
Clear water doesn’t always mean healthy water. Small amounts of chlorine are added to tap water to make it safe for human consumption. Although what’s safe for humans isn’t always safe for fish, in this case it’s toxic. In a new pond or in the event of a full water change, fish can become stressed due to a sudden shift in water chemistry. Properly conditioning the pond after an exchange of water can reduce this stress and create a healthy environment for both fish and aquatic plants to thrive in. Well established pond ecosystems are also susceptible to unhealthy water levels. It is recommended that you test your water regularly and adjust levels as necessary. There are a wide verity of products available for conditioning water to make it safe for use in a fish pond such as water conditioner, chlorine remover, slime coat, pH adjuster and ammonia remover.
