Air Pumps
All ponds and fish require oxygen. As an un-open system, the water garden pond cannot produce sufficient amounts of oxygen by itself. Often sources of oxygen such as fountains, water falls, and streams are not incorporated into the garden pond design. However, when these water features are in use, it is still very possible for the oxygen level in the pond to be insufficient. This is most likely common in the summer when increasing water temperatures reduce the waters ability to hold oxygen. Additionally, when photosynthesis (the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between fish and plants) is inadequate during fall and early spring, oxygen levels can drop in the pond.
When and if fish are observed gasping for air at the surface of the pond, it is likely that the oxygen level has fallen below safe levels for fish to survive. If this occurs it is critical to provide oxygen immediately.
Algae control products and fish medications usually have a lowering effect on the amount of oxygen in the pond. Aerating the pond during treatment is recommended.
